We’re worried about Coronavirus, but more worried about Climate Change.
ONE AUSSIE CORPORATE IS MAKING AN EFFORT
70% 0f Australians have said that despite the Covid-19 crisis, taking care of the planet and making sustainable choices remains important to them.
This being said, on top of World Environment Day being celebrated this month, we take a look at what Woolworths, one of the biggest supermarket chains in Australia, is doing to help the environment during the pandemic.
Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci realised a statement earlier this week: “Its been two years since we phased out single-use plastic bags. While this was a big step, with more than 6 billion bags removed from circulation since then, we’ve always been clear that it was just the first on our journey towards a greener tomorrow.”
So what progress has Woolworths made?
- As of now all supermarkets and metro markets will give customers the option of buying paper shopping bags. These bags are FSC (Forest Stewardship council) certified, made from 70% recycled paper and hold up to 6kg. They can also be easily recycled through kerbside collection.
- Reusable nylon plastic bags, that are compatible with the checkout scales, have been introduced in more than 200 stores.
- In the past 2 years more than 890 tonnes of plastic has been removed from the packaging of fruit, vegetables and bakery items.
They have also committed to an Australian-First sourcing policy; wherever possible they will support local products when it comes to meat, fruit and vegetables and they are working on making these Australian products more identifiable to consumers.
