The role of human influence on the climate system is undisputed but are we really listening and understanding what we are doing to the World??

According to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report released earlier this month scientists are observing changes in the Earth’s climate in every region and across the whole climate system.

The latest assessment of human-made climate change has warned that unless immediate action is taken to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the planet will pass the warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next two decades.

The report shows that emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are responsible for approximately 1.1°C of warming since 1850-1900, and finds that averaged over the next 20 years, global temperature is expected to reach or exceed 1.5°C of warming.

This will result in more heatwaves, droughts, and other extreme weather events.

In the last few weeks alone the world has experienced widespread heatwaves and raging wildfires including temperature records in Antarctica and flooding in Germany.

Are these all ominous signs of what’s to come?

This year Turkey and Greece have been hit particularly hard by wildfires displacing thousands of people and burning tens of thousands of hectares of forest land.

The Greek island of Evia, the country’s second-largest behind Crete, was engulfed in flames for days in what the Greek prime minister described as “a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions.”

While Greece struggled to control the flames with the aid of firefighters and aircraft from several countries, Turkey’s efforts to contain the fires that have ravaged the country since July 28 were helped by recent rainfalls.

The following chart is based on data from the European Forest Fire Information System and shows the scale of this year’s fires in Southern Europe.

The areas burned by wildfires this year already outstrips the annual average of the past 13 years by a wide margin.

Interestingly, Portugal and Spain, both at high risk of wildfires, have not been affected as badly this year, with Portugal’s fire season in particular relatively quiet so far.

It has been clear for decades that the Earth’s climate is changing, and the role of human influence on the climate system is undisputed but are we really listening and understanding what we are doing to the World?

Deep sea mining (DSM) is the process of retrieving minerals from the ocean floor at depths of up to 5km.

This can be done in one of two ways, depending on the type of minerals being retrieved. It can involve scooping up metallic modules from the sea floor or the more intrusive method of extraction from underwater geological features.

Unlocking deep sea deposits using these methods could be an important part of meeting future demand for metals. Such deposits are great examples of orebodies which we haven’t traditionally been able to access due to technological limitations, however these could contribute significantly to the future metal supply.

In order to ensure a smooth transition when accessing these potentially risky orebodies, a strong governance framework will be needed when it comes to deep sea mining; something that is currently missing.

Due to the distinctiveness of the deep sea, and the technologies involved in DSM, it is difficult to confidently assess the environmental, social and governance impacts of this type of mining, thus making a strong government framework difficult.

In terrestrial mining, government use existing projects to help assess the environmental and social risks.

In DSM there is currently no commercial-scale operation, meaning these precedents don’t exits. As such it is near impossible to know how DSM would affect the natural environment on the seafloor and sea life.

A new paper “Governing deep sea mining in the face of uncertainty”, written by researchers from the University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute, emphasises how little we know about the potential impacts of deep see mining and urges for stricter regulations.

According to the study’s lead author Dr Kung government frameworks need to accommodate for these unknowns and reflect the uncertainty of DSM.

Dr Kung acknowledged that developing appropriate regulations for DSM is an ongoing effort by many people worldwide.

“There is certainly a lot of effort by regulators to grapple with the unknowns of DSM,” he said.

Kung hopes his research paper will highlight some of the more critical issues associated with governing this emerging, and potentially very important industry.

It is essential to find a balance between the ever increasing demand for materials and the need to protect our world.

Of the 3.5 million tons of plastic thrown out each year in Australia, only 10% is recycled. The rest is either burnt, buried or shipped overseas.

The majority of waste shipped overseas went to China. However, in January 2018 China announced they would longer be accepting recyclable waste from Australia. Since then Australia has been struggling to deal with a growing waste crisis.

Australian scientists working at Licella may have the answer to this crisis. Dr Len Humphreys, Licella’s co-founder & chief executive officer and Thomas Maschmeyer, Sydney University professor have developed a technology that can recycle all plastics. They have been trialling this system for the past decade in a NSW central coast pilot plant and are now ready to take it to the market.

The Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor (CAT-HTR) uses a form of chemical recycling that changes plastics and turns them back into oil. It does this at molecular level using hot water at a high pressure. From there the oil can be turned into bitumen, petrol or back into different types of plastic, meaning plastic products can be recycled again and again.

This technology differs from other plastic-oil technologies as it doesn’t require plastics to be separated according to type and colour, before being recycled. This is a huge advantage, as the sorting process is what makes many recycling schemes non-viable.

The first commercial recycling plant for this technology will be opened in the United Kingdom, with the hope of processing around 20,000 tons of plastic every year. The UK has been chosen over Australia, as the government promotes the recycling market by offering grants. According to Dr Humphreys, Australia is 5/6 years behind the European market.

The Australian Environment Minister Sussan Ley is currently in talks with Licella regarding their plans and how the Australian government can help. Currently, the government do not offer incentives and grants for the recycling industry. They do, however, offer support for the entire supply and investment chain in a way that will allow businesses to do what they do best.

Professor Damian Gurico, a director at the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology of Sydney told 7.30 the following:

“When we think about how we need to design our systems for plastic use and reuse in the economy, one technology is not going to be enough.”

He believes this technology is impressive and could be one part of the solution. However, it would take dozens of recycling plants to make a substantial dent in the plastic problem within Australia.

The recycling industry in Australia has been widely described as in crisis.

A senate report last year stated that “Enormous quantities of recycled material, particularly materials collected through kerbside recycling, are now being stockpiled at a great risk to the health and safety of local communities. Moreover, quantities of otherwise recyclable material are being landfill.”

Although this new technology sounds impressive and could certainly play a part in the solution to the waste crisis, it seems the bigger problem to address is the over-consumption of plastic in Australia.

In the recent months, millions of people all over the world have changed their lifestyle and behaviours in an attempt to fight COVID 10.

For climate scientists this has given hope that it could be possible to do the same to fight the Climate crisis.

The natural world fully embraced the effects of lock-down and the drastic reduction in human pace. In China alone, between January & February, NASA and the European Space Agency spotted a significant pollution decrease.

The agencies compared the levels of Nitrogen Dioxide, caused by cars, power-plants and other industrial facilities, on the 23rd Jan and during quarantine between the 10th-25th Feb.

The results showed a significant decrease in the gas, with an estimated reduction of between 10-30% – A startling change.

Then there were all those photos on social media showing wildlife returning to areas where they hadn’t been seen for decades, people could see the Himalayas for the first time in 30 years, and the canals of Venice were clear.

Even more startling, according to calculations done by Marshall Burke of Stanford University, this reduction may have helped save the lives of 77,000 people in China, under 5 and over 70.

Burke goes as far as to state that “Given the huge amount of evidence that breathing dirty air contributes heavily to premature mortality, a natural – if admittedly strange – question is whether the lives saved from this reduction in pollution caused by economic disruption from COVID-19 exceeds the death toll from the virus itself.”

Unfortunately, now as life slowly returns to normal Nitrogen Dioxide levels slowly begin to increase again.

This change has not just been seen in China but across the world – in particular Northern Italy. Lockdown in Northern Italy began on the 9th March. Between 1st Jan – 11th March the European Space Agency noted drastic changes in the levels of Nitrogen Dioxide.

Josef Aschbacher, director of Earth Observation programmes, states, that although we should consider weather factors in this reduction, a large extent can certainly be linked to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Given all of this, it seems this is our opportunity to act.

These drastic changes show how the world CAN mobilise to act on climate change.

Climate change is the real longer-term crisis. The response to the Coronavirus pandemic has shown that with government support it is possible for us to change our ways.

We can only hope that this pandemic will change the way people think and make them realise the huge impact human activity has on our environment.

It’s time for China to step up and save the Pangolin …

… and all the other trafficked wildlife.

Correctly, we are all taking notice of the Coronavirus epidemic. We’re following the news about how many cases are diagnosed, where those cases are, the effects on international trade and stock markets. These stories are heading every news bulletin and newspaper front page.

What we are hearing a lot less of though is the role of China’s disgusting and despicable wildlife trade in creating this outbreak of human and economic misery.

Scientists have told us that the corona virus emanated from bats – as did many other viruses that have taken human lives.

But they also tell us that the corona virus most probably made its deadly way into humans via the Pangolin.

What is a Pangolin?

The Pangolin is a smallish animal (up to 60 cm high and 12 kg – depending on the species) that is covered by scales. It’s an ant-eater, (mostly) a ground-dweller, and is native to Asia and Africa.

But it’s most distinguishing characteristic is that it’s the World’s Most Trafficked Animal.

Like most other illegally trapped animals, most end up in Asian marketplaces – predominantly China. Their meat is eaten, and the scales used in traditional medicines.

The scales are keratin. That’s the same keratin as your fingernails (and rhino horn).

“In two record-breaking seizures in the space of a week in April 2019, Singapore seized a 14.2-ton shipment and and a 14-ton shipment of pangolin scales—from an estimated 72,000 pangolins—coming from Nigeria.” National Geographic

China has long been condemned for trafficking Pangolins, on humanitarian and ecological grounds – just as it is condemned for poaching ivory, rhino horn etc.

We can now add health grounds to that list.

The Chinese social points system

The Chinese Government is able to control all aspects of its citizens lives. So much so, that it uses a social points system to reward and punish its citizens’ behaviour.

“Good deeds gain points; bad deeds lose them, with perks and hardships attached. If you fall afoul of a pilot system, you cannot get a loan or mortgage, even if your offense is nonfinancial, like quarreling with neighbors. Conversely, nonfinancial “good deeds”—like giving blood—can cause your loan’s interest rate to drop.” Time Magazine

Even face recognition technology is deployed to check up on behavior.

It’s time to stop

It is now time for China to step up and control this despicable trade, using the social points system if necessary. If it’s there to reward and punish social behavior, wouldn’t stopping the wildlife trade be a good use?

The trade in wild animals has supposedly been stopped following the outbreak of coronavirus, and that is certainly a good step. But this has happened before, only for the ban to lapse with time.

The Chinese Communist Party has an entire Department of Publicity (propaganda), and it’s very effective. Surely it’s not beyond the Chinese Government to use this very efficient publicity machine to educate its citizens that;

keratin doesn’t give you a giant penis, stop you being hysterical, cure malaria or prevent deafness,

slaughtering and distributing animal meat and parts in open, wet markets is a health hazard, and

they are affecting millions of people other than themselves by doing so.

It’s time for China to step up and stop the wildlife trade for good.

Apologies! Wow. I’ve just realised that we haven’t written a post for quite some time!

No excuse – the whole team has just been very busy, but that’s not an excuse to stay silent! So what have we been doing that’s kept us away from posting?

Recruited two new team members – Anthony and Julie – who are getting up to speed

Started working with six new clients on varied projects

Progressed in developing our new interactive dashboards for reporting (see below)

Finished constructing our new canopies and trailer to make fieldwork easier and more efficient

Installed new monitoring stations in preparation for the wet season

Conducted three surface water quality training courses

Undertaken another large spray drift investigation (unfortunately)

4T Director Bronwyn has completed and launched her new book “Small Company, Big Business“, and organised a conference for the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network

We are also very happy to report that 4T Consultants was a finalist in two categories at the Central Highlands Development Corporation Business Awards in October, and a winner in one category.

Interactive Scientific Reports

4T implements new data visualisations

Everyone who has a mobile phone or computer knows that there are new apps and software available on an almost daily basis. So much so that it’s hard to keep up sometimes. A lot of it isn’t relevant to us, but some of these advances are proving truly useful.

4T is continually on the lookout for simple, robust tools that will help our clients to better use their data and we’ve been working with a new one we’ve found that allows us to easily create interactive data visualisations

This new reporting feature allows clients to view historic data via creative visual charts, tables, graphs and many more presentation formats that can be customised to each specific EA or client requirement.

But simply creating pretty charts is not the object of this exercise.

The aim is to improve our ability to turn Data into Information, Knowledge and Wisdom, so we can make better decisions.

Being able to drill down in to data and easily make comparisons means that data sets become much more than a set of numbers that you need for compliance.

Interactive Data is the way of future

This approach to data visualisation protects the source data, while giving clients the ability to produce the reports that they require to make informed decisions.

If you are interested in learning more about this style of reports, please contact 4T Consultants directly.

Is it that time already?

Where did the year go?

The whole 4T team would like to thank our clients, suppliers, and professional associates for another wonderful year – the year in which we celebrated 20 years of business.

To our new clients – thanks for choosing our team, and entrusting your work programs to us. To our continuing clients – thanks once again for your continued support. Some of you have been with us for the entire 20 years of our business journey or very close to it, for which we are grateful.

So, after a very busy 2017, we are looking forward to enjoying a brief break over the Christmas period.

Ian has reached a milestone birthday this year and will be celebrating this Boxing Day by relaxing (is that possible?) on a yacht in the middle of Sydney Harbour for the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race.

Bronwyn will be sitting with her feet up, champagne or wine in hand, cheering from the peace and quiet of the hotel balcony!

The remainder of the team will be spending some well-deserved time with family and friends.

We hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends. Stay safe, and we look forward to starting afresh in 2018.

Our reminder to spread some Christmas love to local heroes …

Even though our rescued joey Peter Roo is now healthy and leading the life of a grown-up red kangaroo, the work of the CH Wildlife Carer Group continues, and they still need your support.
